A demonstrated commitment to community service is essential to becoming a LHOSF scholar. Our scholars are social activists, volunteers, and even founders of high school service programs. We are very proud of the fact that LHOSF scholars stay committed to service while attending college. Many of them have spearheaded voter registration drives, worked for Habitat for Humanity, and assisted various programs for the needy while attending college.
As LHOSF scholars, recipients are required to maintain a B average and
perform community service as a condition for renewing their
scholarship. However, our scholars do not need any prodding, for many
perform service initiatives far in excess of our requirement. The LHOSF Community
Service Initiative
The LHOSF program provides its scholars with group community service projects during the summer. These events are an opportunity for the scholars to learn new ideas to enact in their respective colleges, and they also allow scholars to meet each other and network. For LHOSF scholars, community service is not a task, but a way of life. Notwithstanding the challenges of college and social pressures, they--like Lancelot H. Owens--never fail to answer their community's call of duty. |
